Calling yourself a copywriter because you use ChatGPT is like calling
yourself a chef because you use boxed mac and cheese.

I started at a time when the only advanced copywriting tool was an IBM Electric II—with backspace erase. No internet. No computer. You had to do real research: library, magazines, books, call people.

The concept of a swipe file was new.

You actually had to think, form arguments, write, rewrite, and write again. Then the computer came along. Cut and paste was a godsend. Spell check was amazing.

Then there was the internet. Research became a Google search. Wow. You could copy and paste, pull stuff into your document.

Today, ChatGPT does the writing for you. Wow. But it doesn't teach you how to think. It bypasses those years of staring at a blank page.

That's the strategic advantage "old guys" like us bring to the game. It's that grind in front of that blank page that makes you a copywriter—a strategic thinker.

Young guys who start today are handicapped by ChatGPT.

When the power goes out and the internet goes down, they will be exposed as nothing more than prompt junkies.

That's why I sent you today's message. Because it's the grind that makes you great—not the tools you use.

Bottom line: start grinding.
