Since I became a copywriter in 1984, I have seen the industry go through many changes. I have witnessed the sales letter transition into the direct mail package.

Over the past three decades, I have witnessed first hand how direct mail packages change size from a No. 10 envelope to a 6 x 9 envelope to a magalog and then to a bookalog, or pamphlet, if you will.

With these format changes came higher response, just like we have seen as direct response marketing transitioned from offline to online.

I'm proud that I have ridden the evolution of direct response and profited richly.

Why Direct Mail Will Rise From The Ashes Again

Just like how mail boxes were flooded with promotions over the years, the same thing in happening now, with inboxes, DM flooded with sales messages as well.

With your Instagram and TikTok feeds clogged with messaging from mega accounts, it’s super hard to get your message viewed. You can hope and pray your message goes viral, but that is what you will end up doing—hoping and praying.

I have always learned that if you break the mold, you must zig when the market is zagging. The whole situation today reminds me of the direct mail days, when inboxes were chock-full of messages.

Recipients would stand over their garbage cans throwing the letters away—no differently than people today delete emails and scroll through Instagram, TikToks, and Twitter posts.

This brings me back to my old school rule roots: snail mail.

The reason is simple—you have no competition today. ZERO. Yes, it will cost you more to send a direct mail package or magalog, but if you are thinking ROI, the cost may be the same since you would not be producing a glossy TikTok.

I know that many of you will stop reading at this point because direct mail is foreign to you.

But if my instincts are right, and they often are, then direct mail will have a resurgence. In fact, I am seeing this right now as the number of political mailers are filling my mailbox. The reason is simple. The mailbox often offers you no competition today.

Tragically, few people today have experience in the genre; they don’t really know where to begin, or the components that you should have, or how to write one.

For these reasons, I have done a deep dive on my many numerous control direct mail pages, magalogs, and bookalogs.

Sadly, I lost many of them when I changed computers last year, failing to save them to my cloud account.

However, I was able to find many of the PDFs that were sent to me by the publisher. For those that have never written one of these pieces, they serve a framework for you to follow.

All I would do was change the envelope copy every 90 days and it would continue to bring the money in.

The Second is Another Winning Direct Mail Formula.

This is a magalog for another winning approach: Oil Time Bomb to Blindside U.S. Investors. Notice how that I use the word “Blindside” in the other promotion?

Reason: It works.

As you’ll see, this 24-page magalog/trojan horse promo was one of my top performers at that time. The secret was that it looked like REAL NEWS—but was really an infomercial in a magazine format.

We ended up turning it into a video sales letter and it took off again!

The Third Example I Want to Share With You Is Another Multi-Year Control

I came up with it around 2008. A 36-page pamphlet that I designed like a Farmers Almanac, revealing to investors the top stock for that year. I wrote it like a fireside chat, with every page revealing another new item that they could profit from.

All I would do each year is update the stock and change the year.

Which, of course, aligns with my time-proven philosophy of "working once and getting paid over and over, "instead of vice versa.

The Fourth is Another Big Winner, "Your Missing Report Enclosed."

This thing was money!

Wait to see the letter inside. It was the same letter that was in "50% Richer or Free" control.

But over time, that outer envelope fatigued.

This new envelope revitalize this piece so much so, that it lasted for over a year.

As you'll see, the apology was classic--especially when they never received it before. It was even more effective when we changed format to a 9 x 17 envelope. But I no longer have that copy.
