My Pro Copywriting Tip of the Day : Six Ways to Write a Kick Butt Headline

Today, I want to share a pro tip that has proven to be immensely effective in grabbing readers' attention for me —the art of writing a kick-butt headline.

The fact is, your headline is the gateway to your content, and if you want to hook them to reading your sales message, you need to lure them in with the right bai!

So, let's dive right in!

Start with a Question to Engage Readers:

One of the most effective ways to pique readers' curiosity and draw them into your content is by starting your headline with a compelling question. Questions engage the reader directly, making them pause and think about the answer. It instantly creates a connection between the reader and the content, making them more likely to click and continue reading.

For example, instead of a generic headline like "The Importance of Healthy Eating," consider something like "Are You Sabotaging Your Health with These Common Food Choices?" The question instantly targets the reader's wants and needs, urging them to find out if they are unknowingly harming their well-being.

Emphasize News Value:

Readers are constantly on the lookout for fresh and relevant information. By incorporating news value into your headlines, you tap into their desire for the latest updates and insights.

News value can be anything from current trends, research findings, or new developments in your industry.

Let's say you're writing an article about productivity hacks. Instead of a lackluster headline like "How to Invest in Oil Stocks," try something like "Boom or Bust Ahead for Oil Stocks? The Shocking Answer Could Make you 50% Richer or Poorer in the Next Six Months."

This headline not only is filled with curiosity but also adds actionable information to capture the readers' attention. I made hundreds of thousands of dollars with that headline and versions of it.

By specifying the number of techniques and highlighting their effectiveness, you give readers a clear reason to click and engage with your content. (And boy did they engage!)

Target Readers' Wants and Needs:

To write captivating headlines, you must understand your target audience's desires, pain points, and aspirations. Your headline should directly address what readers are looking for and promise to fulfill their needs.

Imagine you're writing a blog post about stress management techniques. Instead of a vague headline like "Reduce Stress in Your Life," consider something like "Say Goodbye to Stress: 7 Simple Techniques That Bring Instant Calm."

This headline addresses the readers' desire to find quick and effective stress relief, increasing the likelihood of them diving into your article.

Make It Interesting and Crystal Clear:

Finally, a compelling headline should be both interesting to read and crystal clear in its message. Strive to create a balance between grabbing attention and providing a clear idea of what the content entails. Avoid using complex or jargon-heavy language that may confuse or alienate readers.

Remember, a headline like "GET THE MONEY! Proven Sales and Negotiation Coaching for Copywriters" effectively combines (riches in niches) with clarity (proven strategies to get the money). This ensures that readers know what to expect while still maintaining their interest. (Another big winner for me!)

Offer Something Free with Purchase:

One additional strategy to make your headline even more irresistible is to incorporate the allure of a freebie. People love getting something for free, and using this tactic in your headline can significantly boost click-through rates and conversions.

For instance, if you're promoting a digital marketing course, instead of a plain headline like "Subconscious Selling” you can try something like "LAST CHANCE to get all 29 of my swipe files FREE.!"

This headline not only highlights the valuable content you're offering but also sweetens the deal by mentioning the free bonus e-book. (And it worked gangbusters for me!)

By adding this sixth focus to your arsenal, you create a sense of added value and urgency. Readers are more likely to click on your headline if they know they'll receive something valuable for free, making it an effective technique to entice them to engage with your content.

Remember, while incorporating these headline strategies can significantly improve your copywriting game, it's crucial to ensure that the content itself lives up to the promise you make in the headline. Delivering on your headline's value is key to building trust and establishing yourself as an authority in your field.

ONE FINAL NOTE: Test, Test, Test

Remember, the results of your tests hold the ultimate truth.
