My Journey as a Copywriter

I’ve been blessed to find something I excel at—copywriting. For nearly two decades, I worked from home, typing letters for a living and earning like an author. I took my kids to school, coached their sports, trained in jiu-jitsu at lunch, and had dinner ready when my wife got home. No commute, no office—just a garage office where I giggled during conference calls with powerful clients in New York and D.C.

I was a copywriter before it was a recognized profession, serving clients nationwide who valued my specialized skills. This career gave me freedom, and now I feel compelled to give back by helping others achieve similar success.

The Code I Live By

My professional philosophy is rooted in a personal code: treat everyone as important, do more than expected, and act with fairness. Early in my career, I struggled in real estate because I focused on separating people from their money.

But in copywriting, my selfishness became a strength—my name is on every piece, so it has to be exceptional. This commitment to excellence benefits both me and my clients. Copywriting is salesmanship in print, turning dreams into reality. To sell your dream, believe in your value, list what you offer, and master persuasion over time. My 12-year journey to a judo black belt and 13 years to a jiu-jitsu black belt mirror the persistence needed in copywriting.

From Service Provider to Educator

My transition to coaching began with divine interventions—moments of seizing opportunity. A publisher’s offer to write for a success motivation audience taught me to speak to aspirations, leading to promotions like “Discover How Rewarding Your Life Can Be When You Awaken the Leader in You.”

In 2005, at Gary Bencivenga’s seminar, aspiring copywriters approached me for training. I then wrote a motivational letter that became my course, How to Sell Yourself as a Copywriter. This evolved into one-on-one coaching, priced high to deter casual inquiries, yet people signed up. I coach because I love helping others, just as I learned one-on-one.

Discovering My Passion

My copywriting journey started with persistence. As a marketing director for a high school friend, I wrote my first direct mail letter, learning from rejection and iteration. Joining the Direct Marketing Creative Guild exposed me to professionals, and relentless outreach led to my first $500 job.

Bigger opportunities followed, like a $10,000 magalog for Phillips Publishing that sold 25 million pieces, earning me $250,000. A painful lesson came when a publisher knocked off my work, but standing up for myself secured a $17,000 royalty and taught me to protect my IP with contracts.

Monetizing Your Life

Success hinges on action. I connected life-changing moments—like joining a wrestling team or meeting a co-op ed advisor—to my career. Each step, from stealing a Direct Marketing magazine to making cold calls, built my path. You can monetize anything—carpentry, driving, or homemaking—by believing in your value and finding buyers.

If you’re a teacher, coach others to unlock their potential, like tutoring for college prep. If you’re in logistics, solve supply chain problems for manufacturers. The key is defining your offer and reaching the right audience.

Overcoming Mindset Blocks

Many fear copywriting feels like clickbait or salesy timeshare pitches. This stems from imposter syndrome or negative associations with selling. Niche Profitability

To determine if a niche is profitable, test and learn, like in jiu-jitsu: win or learn. In direct marketing, 40% of success is the list, 40% the offer, and 20% the copy. Target buyers, like limousine users, not just wealthy neighborhoods. For a logistics expert, position yourself as the “Uber” of supply chains, connecting manufacturers. Study competitors’ promotions, like International Living for travel niches, to refine your offer.

Nothing happens without action. I coach accountability, requiring clients to show call logs and outreach efforts. A story of a 48-year-old jiu-jitsu beginner who hesitated but stepped through the door illustrates the power of starting.
